Active tourism in Zahara and Atlanterra
Zahara de los Atunes is surrounded by a stunning natural environment. Cork oaks, pine trees, large green meadows with beautiful Andalusian bulls and horses characterize this unspoiled landscape.
Mayor parts of the area arround Atlanterra and Zahara are protected as natural parks. Great bike toursand hiking routes await the visitor who like to be away from the touristic centers on the coast.
In direction Barbate we recommend to visit the Natural Park of La Breña which is reachable within 10min by car. Endless hills covered in pine forests wait to be discovered.
The marshes of La Breña is an area especially rich in variety of flora and fauna as there is no lack of water here even in the summer.
Bird watchers will find their paradise in Zahara and Atlanterra. Of course, the most southern spot in Europe is a meeting point for uncountable bird species on their long journey down to the south.
The African continent is only 12km away, seperated through the Strait of Gibraltar which is the home of dolphines and different types of whales (even Orcas and pot whales) who enjoy the offer of the best tuna in the world just as much as we do.
There are several companies who offer boat excursions to see the whales and the dolphins. The best place to do this would be Tarifa which is situated perfectly on the most southern tip of the european continent and only 20min by car from Zahara de los Atunes.
Just outside of Zahara de los Atunes in direction to the national road N340 you will pass by the large meadows of the famous cattle breeders where hundreds of impressive bulls enjoy their Andalusian home. Some of the best fighting bulls are being breeded and grown here.
